POLITICS OF PARTICIPATION
Body Politic is Dance Umbrella’s strand of discussions and debates focusing on key cultural issues affecting dance and performance. In 2014 we linked up with BAM (Brooklyn, NY) where Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch was performing Kontakthof, for a live webcast discussion on the politics of participation.
Many artists choose to create work with non-professional performers, some for their own artistic reasons, others to provide creative experiences for those participating, but all with a belief in the artistic credibility of the results.
In this live and online discussion we ask what excites artists about choosing this way to work, and whether, as audiences, we watch them differently. How do those taking part feel after the process has ended? How do we, and how can we, critically assess participatory work, when presented in a professional context?
