Quicksilver (London Premiere)
The Place: Robin Howard Dance Theatre
Tue 16 & Wed 17 October
Butoh, often described as a dance of darkness, has left an indelible mark on the contemporary dance scene and continues to fascinate audiences all over the world.
Ko Murobushi, a world-renowned Butoh practitioner, studied under the legendary Tatsumi Hijikata. In Quicksilver, Ko pushes his body to the limit, delving viscerally into a universe of pain and darkness. Ko’s extraordinary muscular body, painted entirely silver, mutates and shape-shifts, conjuring images of a man moving at the very edge of life and death. Quicksilver strips away any notions of movement as decoration and plunges both performer and spectator into a timeless world of pure catharsis.
‘Watching Murobushi constantly moving his body to avoid fixing himself in one pose was akin to watching mercury powder wave and roll its way all over the stage. With just his formidable physicality, Murobushi pierced the audience’s imagination’.
