Dance 4 Films
A selection of seminal films from Channel 4

Tue 6 November
BFI SOUTHBANK

To mark the occasion of Channel 4's 25th birthday, BFI Southbank is hosting a season of screenings focusing on the channel’s work. As part of this season Betsy Gregory, Dance Umbrella’s Artistic Director, and Julia Carruthers, Head of Dance and Performance at Southbank Centre, have curated an evening of C4’s seminal dance films, most of which have been out of public circulation for some time.

Films

From the series Dance on Four:
Dance-Lines* (1987) directed by Terry Braun; Freefall* (1988) directed by Bob Bentley with choreography by Gaby Agis; Strong Language* (1988) directed by Peter Mumford with choreography by Richard Alston.

From the series Dance Lines:
Step In Time Girls (1988) directed by Terry Braun with choreography by Yolande Snaith.

From the series Tights, Camera, Action:
ADVERT and also Waiting directed by Margaret Williams with choreography by Lea Anderson; Mothers and Daughters (1994) directed by Margaret Williams with choreography by Victoria Marks.

From the series 4 Dance:
Pointe Blank (1999) directed by Rupert Edwards with choreography by Mark Baldwin.

The evening also includes Canta* directed by Geoff Dunlop with choreography by Ian Spink which was filmed for C4 in 1982 but never broadcast.

This unique screening is a ‘must-see’ for anyone interested in delving into the early days of dance filmmaking in Britain.
