BORIS CHARMATZ & DIMITRI CHAMBLAS / CESAR VAYSSIE (FRANCE)
A Bras Le Corps and Les Disparates (Film)

The Place: Robin Howard Dance Theatre
Sat 29 & Sun 30 October

This two-part programme presents the first joint work of Boris Charmatz and Dimitri Chamblas. Presented 'in the square', A bras le corps (Bear Hug) purposefully confines the movement of the dancers. It abolishes the distance between them and the audience and prevents any possibility of an escape by either. The intimacy of the space emphasises the laid-bare dancing of this explosive work and the darkness of Paganini's score.

Les Disparates, a film by César Vayssié makes up the second part of the programme. Shot in the rainy cityscape of Dieppe, time jumps and shifts as solo dancer Boris Charmatz is catapulted from one location to another: the seaside, a street, a factory and a bar. The film plays humourously and tenderly with space, time and the indomitable force of the dancing body. Les Disparates was awarded the second prize at Springdance Cinema 2000 (Utrecht).

'The audience misses nothing of their efforts: sweat running down, the redness of skin battered against the floor, the oppressed breath, the fugitive fragility of a look, the softness of a hand.’
Le Monde (on À bras le corps)
