ROSAS / RICHARD ALSTON DANCE COMPANY / AKRAM KHAN COMPANY (Belgium, UK)
Dance to Music by Steve Reich - A Triple Bill

Barbican Theatre
Thu 28 - Sat 30 September

To mark the 70th birthday of composer Steve Reich, barbicanbite06 has put together a programme celebrating the special fascination that Reich’s music holds for contemporary choreographers

Rosas presents Piano Phase and Violin Phase from Fase, four movements to the music of Steve Reich. First seen in London as part of Dance Umbrella ‘82, Fase is one of De Keersmaeker’s earliest works and is generally considered a modern classic.

‘This is thrilling work, the dancing burns like dry ice.’
Village Voice

Richard Alston Dance Company presents a new work choreographed to Reich’s Proverb and Viderunt Omnes by the medieval French composer Perotin. Reich’s Proverb was inspired by Perotin’s piece so it is only fitting they should be presented together in the world premiere of this dance piece commissioned by barbicanbite06. The full company of ten dancers is accompanied by Theatre of Voices and Athelas Sinfonietta from Copenhagen, directed by Paul Hillier.

‘Alston is one of the few real dance makers in the world and he can show us how, when real dance comes along, it changes everything.’
Dancing Times

To complete the evening, Akram Khan Company performs Variations for Vibes, Pianos and Strings. An ECHO commission, this trio is performed by an all male cast led by Akram Khan and accompanied by London Sinfonietta conducted by Alan Pierson.

‘Khan’s choreography is explosively expressive and wittily integrated into the Sinfonietta.’
