FOCUS ON ROSAS
Whilst Dance Umbrella 2005, with its France Moves intiative, focused on one country, the 2006 festival highlighted for the first time the work of a single choreographer.
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and her company Rosas have been at the forefront of contemporary dance world-wide for more than two decades. Dance Umbrella introduced London audiences to Anne Teresa’s choreography in 1982 when she and Michèle Anne de Mey performed Fase at the ICA. This year, Rosas will present extracts from this seminal work at the Barbican as part of its Steve Reich celebrations. Over the intervening 24 years, Rosas has been a regular visitor to the UK, performing not only in London at Sadler’s Wells, the South Bank and The Place but also in Leicester, Glasgow, Brighton, Newcastle, Manchester and Warwick.
Dance Umbrella offers festival audiences the chance to see the impressive range of De Keersmaeker’s choreography in a number of different formats:

Barbican Centre: The Pit
De Keersmaeker created Violin Phase in 1981. In 2001, Thierry de Mey filmed the piece from the top of a 20m high crane. As De Keersmaeker dances on smooth white sand, her footprints reveal the pattern of the choreography.
