This is the Story of a Girl in a World
Tue 7 & Wed 8 October, 7.45pm
Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall
Stephen Petronio is known for a body of work that melds movement and form with the diverse worlds of popular culture, rock music and fashion. This year’s triple bill is no exception.
Beauty and the Brut is a full company work set to a commissioned score by indie rock duo Fischerspooner. Within a twisting narrative of a spontaneous pick-up on a beach, the movement slides between the jaggedly raw and sensuously sleek.
BLOOM, returning after a sell-out success in 2006, is a piece about transformation and awakening, to a commissioned Rufus Wainwright score and complemented by the uplifting voices of a local children's choir performing live.
The evening ends with This is the Story of a Girl in a World, exploring the increasingly blurred concept of gender. The soundtrack combines the seductive voice of Antony Hegarty (of Antony and The Johnsons) with the music of Lou Reed and Nico Muhly.
‘The work takes you immediately and confidently into its own sexy, glamorous world.’ THE NEW YORK TIMES (on Beauty and the Brut)
