Future Physical

Future Physical is a two year programme of work (2001-03) co-conceived by shinkansen London and East England Arts. As digital boundaries grow ever more pervasive in everyday life, the boundaries between the physical and the virtual are becoming increasingly blurred. Future Physical is a cultural programme which aims to explore those changing boundaries, examining the interfaces between the natural world/the human body, and the digital tools of modern society. This site is currently under construction and will evolve across the autumn so do return for special developments.

essexdance is the countywide dance development agency for Essex based in Chelmsford, and exists to act as a focus of innovation and excellence for dance development in Essex. essexdance has been developing its role in dance and technology through research and development, funded by East England Arts. Trajets is a collaboration of between an international collective of artists including Susan Kozel, Gretchen Schiller, Rob Lovell and Scott Wilson. Trajets is an installation which combines dance, digital images, sound and architecture. Sensing and 'force-field' software create a mesmerising effect as 12 suspended screens, onto which abstracted images of moving bodies are projected, appear to dance with the visitor. Trajets is open for use and participation at the ICA between the 10th-13th October 2001 between 2-8p.m. in the theatre.

While sets and lighting provide diverse theatrical settings, magnifying lenses, scattered across the stage, create a dazzling effect like a close-up in a film. O Vertigo and their new performance Luna will be on at Queen Elizabeth Hall on Tue 23rd and Wed 24th October 2001 at 7.45p.m.

Choreographer Frederic Flamand pushes the exploration of real and virtual performance, and the mediatisation of modern life. The stunning design, by New York, architects Diller and Scofido, incorporates a mesmerising 'mirror' effect that shifts perspective to schizophrenic effect. You can see Charleroi Danses/Plan K at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Fri 26th and Sat 27th October 2001 at 7.45p.m.

Dance on Screen

Dance on Screen is a festival of dance created for the screen organised in association with Dance Umbrella. It provides a vibrant and creative focus for choreographers and film makers through a major video/dance workshop, discussions and screenings of international dance films. Haverhill2000

Haverhill2000 was a photographic project which took place in Haverhill, Suffolk, England, U.K. 2000 people from Haverhill participated in the project as the artist Chris Dorley-Brown morphed their genders and ages using software such as Photoshop and Morph. Dorley-Brown has created a morphed portrait library and also a 'virtual population'. Well worth while putting some time in here to see the fascinating evolution of the fully morphed results of 2000 people.
